When you think of the daily behaviors you engage in which are “mobile”, the list might include (beyond email) getting directions for your destination, checking-in at a local venue to discover if any specials are available, and updating your Facebook page. Consider how those activities change when you engage in “mobile banking”. What are you most likely to do with a mobile banking application? Do you find value in being able to locate the nearest ATM or branch and checking your balance, or are you interested to be able to make a deposit from your phone and skip the branch visit altogether?

Most banks by now have introduced some form of mobile application and some have added features that surprise and delight. Sovereign Bank created an app that makes life easy for customers who participate in its Sovereign Cash Rewards by allowing them to locate nearby merchants and earn big cash back rewards through purchase in this merchant funded network.  But for others, mobile applications are another box to tick off by the marketing folks. Yes we have one, they say, but do customers care and how engaged are they with this potentially valuable communications channel?

If you’re interested to find answers to these questions and learn how to create more engagement with mobile banking applications, you should drop your plans for early next week and attend the Mobile Banking & Commerce Summit starting this Sunday June 10 in San Francisco. One of the underlying themes at the Summit this year is gamification, and Jane McGonigal, a world-renowned designer of alternate reality games, will deliver the keynote address. Jane is the NY Times bestselling author of “Reality Is Broken” and will explore how games engage people’’s imagination and innovation, and how that can be applied to social and business causes.

The conference is a property of American Banker and Loyalty Truth is pleased to be a media partner for the event. We’ll have representation at the conference, so please say “hello” as we plan to cover the event in detail.

During the two plus days, there will be 500+ mobile financial services execs on hand, getting first-hand experience on how gaming can be used in financial services as they play a custom-designed in-conference game “Mobile Avengers” all while vying for prizes of up to $1K plus mobile gadgets. In addition to Jane McGonigal, you’ll hear from Campbell Edlund, CEO of EMI Strategic Marketing speaking on ““Monetizing the Convergence of Social and Mobile Payments” and from LivingSocial’s SVP, Merchant Solutions, Dickson Chu on “Mobile Incentives and Loyalty Offers”. These are just a few highlights and a quick look at the agenda will give you the full picture.
