Through its attorneys, Snapchat has filed two trademarks covering peer to peer and online payments under the Snapchat name. The filings were made July 11th, 2014 and documented in this Tech Crunch article.
The specific language of the filings included:
- “Computer application software for processing electronic payments to and from others that may be downloaded from a global computer network” – Trademark Serial # 86335306
- “Electronic transfer of money for others; providing electronic processing of electronic funds transfer, ACH, credit card, debit card, electronic check and electronic, mobile and online payments” – Trademark Serial # 86335307
Nothing more about Snapchat plans for introducing a payment service has been revealed, but one thing is certain – social networks with large engaged user groups are all interested in finding ways to funnel money through their gateways and collecting a toll along the payments highway.
