Marsh Supermarkets lights beacons and readies for Apple Smartwatch users

Marsh Supermarkets recently revealed the implementation of beacons at its 75 store locations to prepare for the release of Apple’s smartwatch. Since the Apple Watch won’t debut until Spring 2015, you might wonder why Marsh has deployed Beacons so far in advance. In an AdWeek article written by Lauren Johnson, Todd Dipaola, CEO of inMarket, explained, saying “We’ve built the integration ahead of the debut so on day one—as the Apple Watch comes out—these apps can be ready for prime time.”

Marsh operates 81 locations across three stores brands in Indiana and Ohio. They also operate the largest Pharmacy chain in the state of Indiana with 41 locations. The beacons will be used to push ads to Apple Watch users when they enter the store vicinity. Marsh customers can take advantage of ads using Marsh’s mobile app or one of the many other apps available via the inMarket network including LisEase, Epicurious, and Key Ring

It’s fully possible for Marsh’s to send special offers to users of those services as well. “If you look at that situation when you’re running through a store, how much more convenient is it to have a hands-free option to see what you’re making for dinner or understand what the deals are when you’re in-store?” said Todd Dipaola.

Here are a few examples of pings that Marsh’s could send out via beacons:

  • Shopping lists
  • Recipe options
  • Special promotions
  • Proximity-only coupons

Marsh’s announced earlier that its loyalty program, the Fresh Idea Card, will be linked to mobile offers for the sole purpose of tracking customer data such as coupon redemption. The collected data will than be used to create more relevant, targeted ads for its users in the future.

On a side note, Marsh Supermarkets is claiming to be the first company to test customer offer delivery via smartwatches. This continues their tradition of innovation as Marsh Supermarkets was the first to implement UPC, or barcode, scanners in-store back in 1972.
